James Hutton was an 18th century geologist who was first to propose the idea of tectonic plates. He was also important agronomist, and a progressive thinker in plant husbandry. And like Hume, he came from the Merse in the Borders of Scotland..
This idea for an artwork takes Geologist Hutton as the start point, and as succinctly as possible, through this stoney outcrop, refers to the tectonic plate that it’s part of, and which he identified. The idea also refers to Agronomist Hutton in the large wheat plant – like an idea stretching for light through the rocks. The plant would be made from Corten steel, which is steel that does not rust after the first patination.
